After replacing a filter cartridge or installing a new water purifier, you may notice that the water looks milky, whitish or cloudy when poured into a glass. This is usually normal.
The cloudy appearance is commonly caused by tiny air bubbles trapped inside the new filter cartridge, filter housing or purifier system. When water begins flowing through the system, the trapped air is released as microscopic bubbles.
To check whether air bubbles are the cause, fill a clear glass with water and leave it undisturbed for a few minutes. If the water clears gradually from the bottom upward, the cloudiness is caused by air bubbles.
Follow the purifier or filter manufacturer’s flushing instructions after installation or cartridge replacement. The cloudiness should gradually reduce as trapped air leaves the system.
Water containing only trapped air bubbles is generally safe to drink. However, if the water remains cloudy, contains visible particles, or has an unusual taste, colour or odour, stop using it for drinking and have the system checked.
